COHASSET — The members of Quincy College’s Class of 2019 come from 28 countries and 77 communities across the state, Michael Bellotti, the school’s president, said Friday. And it’s that diversity, he said, that has prepared the graduates for whatever may come next.

“You have learned more about other people, more about other cultures, and about yourselves,” he said. “Most importantly, you have learned how to learn.”

The city-owned community college graduated 569 students in associate and certificate programs Friday at the South Shore Music Circus. Of the graduates, 403 earned associate in science degrees, 83 earned associate in arts degrees and 83 graduated with a program certificate.

This year’s commencement speaker, state Rep. Ronald Mariano, spoke about the school’s history and unique partnership with the City of Quincy. Mariano, the House majority leader and founding member of the college’s board of governors, said the school has given South Shore students a change to pursue higher education since its founding in 1958.

“Sixty years later, it is clear that Quincy College was a good investment because every one of you is an asset to your communities,” he said.

Cleunisse Tamara DeBrito, who graduated with two associates degrees Friday, was the class speaker. DeBrito, who is of Cape Verdean descent, said Quincy College allowed her to achieve “the American dream.”

“A good portion of us are international students who have traveled miles overseas to reach the same destination. Here at Quincy College, we merge to form a melting pot of students all striving to achieve the same goal: graduation,” she said. “When we all learn to work together, we are all stronger.”
