Quincy
College
Awards Official Pin to 67 Nursing Graduates
Quincy College honored 67 nursing graduates at the
27th Annual Professional Recognition
Ceremony on May 15, 2008 at the Bethany
Congregational Church in Quincy Center. Graduates
were awarded the school pin to recognize their
completion of the Associate Degree in Nursing.
The
graduates wore traditional white nursing uniforms
and walked through the church carrying a single red
rose over their hearts. White uniforms are worn to
honor the contributions of Florence Nightingale and
red roses are carried to signify the Red Cross, a
symbol of the wounded and dying soldiers of the
Crimean War. Red roses were also included in the
ceremony because they represent love, respect and
courage.
Kristin M. Parks, Chair of the Associate Degree
Program in Nursing, welcomed everyone to the
ceremony and introduced the Quincy College faculty
and staff in attendance. Vice President of Academic
Affairs Patricia Vampatella, R.N. offered greetings
from the College and shared her personal history as
a nurse.
Peter H. Tsaffaras, Esq., Chair of the Quincy
College Board of Governors introduced the Board
members who were in attendance at the ceremony
including Mark Bertman, Mary Jo Brogna and William
Grindlay.
President Martha Sue Harris offered her
congratulations to the graduating class and
expressed how proud the Quincy College community was
of the graduating class and its accomplishments.
Professor Elizabeth Chandler of the Associate Degree
in Nursing Program shared with the audience the
history of the Nursing Pin. “The pin achieves two
purposes,” said Professor Chandler. “First it
proclaims to all, ‘this is a nurse.’ Secondly, it
promotes a sense of belonging to a most noble
profession.”
The
official awarding of the pins was presented by
Kristin Parks and Professors Elaine Beaupre and
Ronald Dorleans.
The
graduates made their way to the stage to be pinned
by either a faculty member of their choice or a
family member who is in the nursing profession.
Class representatives Kerri Smiddy and Lindsey
Mattus took to the stage to give their farewell
addresses. Smiddy offered a humorous farewell which
included a song dedicated to Professor Chandler
entitled, “Betsy Can I,” a spoof of the song “Sexy
Can I” by R&B singer Ray J.
The
ceremony concluded with closing remarks by Kristin
Parks who wished each graduate congratulations and
good luck.
