Health and Wellness Expo 2008 a Great Success
For
the fifth year in a row, the Allied Health
Department’s Health and Wellness Expo 2008 was a
great success with 75 participating students, over
10 participating outside vendors and extremely warm
and sunny weather, which worked in their favor.
The
halls and atrium of Presidents Place were packed
with plenty of visitors and onlookers, which
included family and friends of the participating
students, employees of the nearby businesses and
other curious passers-by.
All
of the students involved in the Health and Wellness
Expo are currently enrolled in the full-time
Associate Degree Program of Nursing. Prior to this
event, the students were broken up into groups to
prepare a display and presentation on a variety of
issues associated with health and wellness.
“The students self-select their groups; working in
groups help develop this process, and they also
select their topic, which helps to ensure their
interest in the subject,” said Betsy Chandler, RN
Nursing Professor.
Student groups were motivated and quick to catch the
attention of people walking by, asking those people
questions related to their selected topic. Students
were positive, passionate and informative when
discussing their topics offering insightful
information and tips to curious visitors checking
out their display.
“The Health and Wellness Expo gives students the
opportunity to work with the community as a client,”
said Chandler. “It also gives students the
opportunity to assess community health learning
needs and to develop, implement and evaluate a
teaching plan to meet those needs.”
Participation in the Health and Wellness Expo also
gives students a chance to win awards based on their
presentation and display. Three student displays are
to receive certificates; one for Most Creative, one
for Most Informative and one for Best Overall.
Certificates will be handed out at the RN Pinning
Ceremony in May.
