Quincy College Awards Degrees
 The
sun came out just in time on Saturday, January 6th
to congratulate Quincy College graduates. Students, faculty, staff,
Quincy College executives and Board of Governors,
along
with the mayor, processed in to the family and friend
filled President’s
Ballroom at the Marriot in Quincy.
The graduates represented over 50 communities in Massachusetts and
16 countries around the world. The call to order was given by faculty
member Susan Cahill, who was given the distinction of Mace Bearer
this year. The Mace Bearer is the recipient of the President’s
Award for Excellence, which is given every year to an esteemed faculty
member.
 The Star Spangled Banner was beautifully performed on the trumpet
by Quincy College student Bobby Gallegos. Newly appointed Chair of
the Quincy College Board of Governors Peter Tsaffaras gave welcoming
remarks to the students and their families. Mayor William Phelan was
also on hand to formally greet the crowd with a warm dialogue of encouragement.
Sue Harris, President of Quincy College, welcomed the crowd and congratulated
them on their accomplishments.
Quincy College alumna Amy Dwyer, who currently serves as the College’s
Director of International Student Services, gave the commencement
address. She shared with the graduates some kernels of wisdom she’d
learned along the way. She encouraged the students to find out what
they love to do and do it, to take risks, and to give to others in
need of help.  Dwyer was then honored with the 2nd Annual Distinguished
Alumna Award, the first woman to receive the award, as expressed by
President Sue Harris.
Graduating students, Sharon Barrett and Aliki Edwards, addressed
the crowd on behalf of their class. Barrett focused on her journey
through Quincy College, and spoke movingly about the importance of
continuing to learn and how great her experience was at Quincy College.
Edwards reflected on the students’ accomplishments in a heartfelt
and spirited charge of achievement.
Each student who was awarded an Associate Degree was congratulated
by President Harris along with the Mayor, and the Quincy College Board
of Governors. Congratulations to all the graduates!
