Policy 5 - 13: INDEPENDENT STUDY
Quincy College recognizes that scholars have unique
interests and provides for those who would like to
pursue special research projects under the guidance
of a faculty member. Independent
study is not intended to be a substitute for a regular
course, but rather an opportunity for a student to
work in a special area related
to his/her field of endeavor in depth and with specific
objectives.
To qualify for Independent Study, a student with 30
earned credits from Quincy College must have a 3.0
average in his/her area of specialty and at least
a cumulative 2.7 average overall. No
student may pursue more than three credits per semester
to a total of six independent study credits while
earning an Associate Degree.
Proposals for independent study must be presented
no less than five (5) days prior to the start of the semester
in which the study is
to take place. Acceptance or rejection of the proposal
will be made within five (5) class days of the presentation.
The acceptance of
an independent study is optional on the part of the
instructor. Approval is obtained through the faculty
sponsor to the chairperson and finally
from the Vice President of Educational Services.
The fee for independent study credits will be the same
as for a regular course and the grade
issued will be in accordance with the College’s grading system.
Under unusual circumstances, students may be permitted
to take a college credit-bearing course in which
an independent study format is used. Ordinarily,
independent study may
not be taken if
the course is a laboratory science or skill course
( biology, typing, etc.), is offered during the
semester in which the request is made,
lacks a detailed outline and/or individualized
instruction material, or is required for graduation at the end
of the semester in which
the request is made.
