IDS 155 Critical Thinking & Writing

This course provides students with a foundation and practice in thinking clearly and critically. Practice includes developing writing skills that will enable students to clearly present claims to support their conclusions and avoid reinforcing biases. Practice in thinking clearly includes the opportunity to analyze and discuss various types of media - including television, cinema and print - to determine which sources provide the most reliable information and to identify faulty thinking. Topics addressed include the relationship between critical thinking and clear writing, credibility of sources, rhetorical devices, fallacies, unclear or misleading language, and the characteristics of various types of arguments. 3 credits

 

IDS 160 Career Planning: A Developmental Approach

This course is designed to address three main topics.  What Do I Really Want in a Career?  What is out there for me?  How Do I Reach My Goals?  Through a variety of readings, lectures, informational interviews, reflections, and discussion-sharing, students will identify their skills, abilities, areas of interest, and workplace values.  Students will create a Career Management File Binder, a Career Portfolio, and an Interview Marketing Kit.  3 credits

 

IDS 166 College Success

This course helps students to become successful in college by making the most of their natural abilities, strengthening their comprehension of reading assignments, taking meaningful lecture notes, developing effective strategies for taking objective and essay examinations, improving long-term and short-term memory, managing time, and improving oral communication. 1 credit
