WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT QUINCY COLLEGE?
The students! They are enthusiastic and dedicated;
very committed to their career goals. I love the diversity
of their backgrounds and experiences, their willingness
to share with and help each other, and to relate their
experiences to what they are learning in the classroom.
I also like the fact that the college itself values the students. Unlike so many
colleges that emphasize research, Quincy College values the students, and places
its emphasis on teaching. That enables me to be in the classroom working with
students instead of putting my time and energy into research and publication.
WHAT IS YOUR PHILOSOPHY OF TEACHING?
Although I, myself, tend to learn by reading and reflecting (In fact,
I once tried to learn how to play softball by reading
a book about it!), I strongly believe in learning by doing. To that
end, I attempt
to incorporate the real world or simulations of real
life, in all of my courses. For example, in Litigation, instead of
just talking
about form and substance requirements, we take a mock
client with a mock case and use it to draft the pleadings (documents)
that would
be used in such a case in court. In Real Estate, the
class goes to the Registry of Deeds to do a title search using the
actual Registry
records. Even the Introductory class goes to Quincy
District Court to see the legal system in action.
