WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT QUINCY COLLEGE?
The multicultural environment, the diversity in the
student populations, and the challenges that this
brings to the college. The fact that our students
have all different kinds of preparation, and their
interests are wide, makes teaching here very exciting!
I find students who are very well prepared in Math,
next to students who are not comfortable with Math,
and then, the opportunity to explore Math together.
I also like the presence in this college of many
dedicated and interesting people, who are creative,
and open and fun.
WHAT IS YOUR PHILOSOPHY OF TEACHING?
Math is a language, a science, a process, a "universal model" for
thinking and solving problems. A teacher has to transmit all these
aspects, in a series of words, symbols, graphs, techniques, and behaviors
(like thinking and writing the equations clearly and correctly), hoping
that somehow the student will be able to internalize the concepts,
and apply them when it is necessary to do so. But teaching is a form
of communication, and for this, is very important to see the learner
as a person, and recognize, and even enjoy the teacher-student connection,
as a give-and-take exchange, where often the teacher can learn with
the students. I do respect and appreciate my students, I try to help
them if they let me, I listen to what they have to say and I am sorry
when I can't help them. I wish they would listen when I say "You
need to take a lower course before you take this one", it would
really save them a lot of aggravation, but 'alas' they have a right
to learn from their mistakes, and that is something that I emphasize
in my courses: I hope you do many mistakes in this class, so you can
learn.
