Quincy College
 History of Quincy College

During the mid-1950’s, demand for higher education on the South Shore, and Quincy in particular, led to the creation of the Citizen's Committee appointed to study the feasibility of establishing a community college. This committee recommended that a community college should exist and as early as 1956, the first college-level courses were offered.

In May of 1958, College Courses, Inc., a non-profit charitable organization, was officially formed to help further higher education on the South Shore. In the Fall of that same year, the first freshman class began at what would later be known as Quincy Junior College.

Less than five years later, Quincy College was empowered to award the Associate in Arts and the Associate in Science degrees.

In 1991, the school founded the Plymouth campus located twenty minutes south of Quincy in downtown Plymouth, Massachusetts.

Today, Quincy College is a fully-accredited college offering over 500 courses and awarding Associate degrees and certificates of completion in a wide variety of studies.

Quincy College Mace

The position of Mace Bearer is derived from the medieval times in England when officials were guarded while assuming office by a bodyguard holding a mace as a weapon. The mace was held in readiness to foil all attackers. It is now used ceremonially as a symbol of office, and is traditionally carried by a distinguished faculty member preceding the President. The Quincy College mace is carried each year by the Quincy College faculty member selected as the Outstanding Teacher of the Year.

Quincy College "Chain of Office"

The Presidential Chain of Office, used in academic celebrations, represents traditions dating as far back as the sixteenth century and today designates the presidential leadership of the academy. The Quincy College Chain of Office displays the names of this institution's presidents, both past and present, as well as the four academic departments of the College, including Allied Health, Liberal Arts & Sciences, Business & Public Service and Technology. From the chain hangs the Quincy College seal.

Quincy College Seal

The current design of Quincy College's seal incorporates a depiction of Coddington Hall, the Quincy College name in logo script and the institution's founding date. These three components of the seal are enclosed in a circle of laurels to create a seamless design. This seal, created in 2001, replaced a previous college seal that reflected a slight modification of the Quincy Public School System.
